Screening

New screening technologies enable the search for probiotic strains with a desired function such as competition with specified pathogenic micro-organisms, or immunomodulating properties to enhance immune reactivity to these pathogens. Using purified white blood cells (PBMCs), NIZO has identified considerable variation between candidate probiotic strains in immunomodulating capacities.

In-vivo efficacy

Using infection models with Salmonella and Influenza, the immunomodulatory effects can be followed in vivo, and consequences on the infection process become clear. Studies on traveller’s diarrhoea in healthy volunteers explain the benefit for humans. In this way, NIZO has helped several companies in building their health claim dossier.
