Lactococcus lactis is an excellent host for the expression of a vast multitude of genes. Since my study of Microbiology and Microbial Genetics, I have been working for the last 25 years with Lactococci and other lactic acid bacteria in the areas of gene expression and fermentation. My inspiration is in multidisciplinary projects with close interaction with the client. One example is the development of a process for the production of the antibacterial enzyme lysostaphin from the micro-liter cloning-scale to the 1000-l production-scale. At NIZO I am responsible for gene expression projects using the in-house developed expression systems NICE for lactococci (nisin induced gene expression) and SURE for Bacillus subtilis (subtilin regulated gene expression).
