NIZO expert appointed Theme Director Bioingredients & Functionality at TI Food & Nutrition

TI Food and Nutrition announces the appointment of Prof. Dr. Michiel Kleerebezem as Theme Director Bioingredients & Functionality effective 1 October 2011. He succeeds Dr. Jan Sikkema who has been heading the research programme since June 2007.

Prof. Dr. Michiel Kleerebezem will combine this new appointment at TI Food and Nutrition with his current positions as Principal Scientist within the Health Department of NIZO food research and his new position as Associate Professor at the Host Microbe Interactomics group in the Department Animal Sciences of Wageningen University that will be effective 1 September 2011.
 
Michiel Kleerebezem (1964) studied Biochemistry at the University of Groningen and obtained a PhD from University Utrecht in 1995. After he took his degree he performed research as a postdoctoral fellow at NIZO food research and became involved in several TI Food and Nutrition projects related to lactic acid bacteria molecular biology and (meta)genomics and host-microbe interactions in the human gastrointestinal tract. In 2005 Michiel Kleerbezem became Principal Scientist at NIZO food research. Since 2007, he also holds a position as Professor in “Bacterial Metagenomics” at the Wageningen University.

Michiel Kleerebezem has an impressive track record of innovative research. He is a well-recognised expert as author and co-author of more than 150 publications in peer-reviewed journals, several book chapters (>20), and popular science journals (>20). Michiel has first-hand experience in food industry research and is (co-) inventor of more than 15 patent applications. He has been associated with TI Food and Nutrition since its foundation in 1998. Dr. Ad Juriaanse, CEO of NIZO food research is very proud that Michiel's expertise, built up over the past 15 years at NIZO, is recognized and appreciated and looks forward to an even more intens cooperation with TI food and Nutrition and its industrial partners.
