The Biotechnology Fermentation Factory (BFF) in Ede is a state-of-the-art, open-access scale-up facility dedicated to advancing production of foods and food ingredients through fermentation technology, including precision fermentation. Operated though NIZO Food Research, the BFF is designed to help companies scale their innovations from concept to commercialization, enabling a more sustainable and diverse food future.

Food-Grade (Precision) Fermentation Facility: The BFF provides cutting-edge infrastructure for scaling up aerobic fermentation processes up to 10,000L in a food-grade environment, ensuring safety, quality, and regulatory compliance, including materials containing genetically modified microorganisms, such as yeast, fungi, and bacteria: – Precision fermentation – Microbial biomass – Side stream valorisation (liquid) through fermentation
Cost-Effective Scaling: From laboratory to pilot scale; the BFF eliminates the need for start-ups and growing companies to invest in expensive infrastructure, accelerating innovation and reducing time-to-market.
Seamless Integration with NIZO’s Food and Health Expertise: Located on NIZO’s campus, the facility connects directly to NIZO’s extensive food-grade downstream processing (DSP) pilot plant, food application center and laboratories.
